Chemistry Tutoring
We have two fantastic Chemistry Tutors, please see their details below.
John Yates, BSc (Hons), PGCE
I studied Civil Engineering at University College London. After graduating, I worked for consulting engineers Halcrow designing roads and bridges in London and Dubai.
In 1984, I moved to Halcrow’s Swindon office and worked on the management of motorway communications projects. During this time I completed Open University studies in electronics, computing and instrumentation.
In 1992, I re-trained as a teacher, studying for my PGCE (specialising in Physics) at Bath University. I taught Science at Lavington School until retirement in 2006. In 2008 I was an examination marker for KS3 Science SATs and in 2009 for Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry.
In retirement, I’ve been learning to write for theatre.
I’m married with one son and two grandsons. My wife and I help out with the child minding.
How I can help
I provide one-to-one tuition, either face-to-face at our home or through Zoom. I address the specific needs of the student. I aim to engage in a respectful dialogue and encourage students to ask questions. Where appropriate, I can reinforce their school learning with individual exploration of the topics being covered in class.
Other ways of working include:
- Working through past exam papers. The student completes the paper at home, then we go through their answers in detail. If appropriate, I expand this into a fuller discussion of the relevant part of the curriculum. I identify the features that examiners are looking for when marking.
- Addressing specific topics. If a student has identified a specific area of the curriculum they find difficult, I can tailor lessons to develop the student’s understanding, starting with the fundamentals.
Subjects and levels taught:
- KS3 Science
- Common Entrance Science
- GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics
- AS and A2 Physics
- AS and A2 Chemistry

'Just wanted to let you know that J received a 9 for Chemistry 9 for Physics and a 7 for Biology; he’s thrilled and many thanks for all your help. He’s excited to start his A levels and looks forward to seeing you for Physics tutoring when he’s back at school in September.'
Izzy Dempster, BSc (Hons) Biology, PGCE
Following a degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol I completed my PGCE in Secondary Biology in 2015. In the subsequent 10 years of teaching I have held a variety of roles including as a Head of Department and as an examiner. I love supporting students 1 to 1 and take huge joy from seeing the amount of progress that can be made in this context.
How I can help
I tutor online, allowing sessions to be arranged flexibly and fitted easily around prior commitments. I am always happy to offer a free trial for students to meet me and establish a plan to check that this would work for them. I can also offer small group sessions. I take great pride in my lessons being something that students look forward to and while I'm happy to offer one off support if appropriate, I care deeply about fostering respectful and supportive relationships with students and have had the joy of supporting some at different points all the way through their Senior School journey.
- KS3 Science
- Common Entrance Science
- GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and PE
- AS and A2 Biology and PE
- IB Biology and SEHS
Izzy's Testimonials
'Izzy was absolutely amazing helping my Y11 daughter get up to speed for her GCSEs. Not only is she hugely engaging and supportive, she was brilliant in the fact that she could help across all three sciences.'
'Izzy put the love back into learning for me and made me really enjoy my subjects again! She was really helpful in my exam preparation helping me improve my grade in A Level Biology from a C to an A and I would 100% recommend her to anyone.'
'Izzy's combination of patience, tenacity and enthusiasm are second to none and my daughter coming out with 7s and above in subjects she really struggled with is testament to her methods and ability. I'm just about to sign her up for daughter no. 2!'
'Izzy is a fab tutor, helping me to get my A in Biology A Level. She made concepts I found complicated much more straightforward to understand and recall, and massively improved my confidence and exam technique. I really enjoyed our weekly sessions and because she was so approachable I felt able to ask her anything, however silly my question felt! '
